Leinfelden-Echterdingen – September 2025: Back in 2024, the Minol-Zenner network was presented as the world's largest LoRaWAN network. Now the group is celebrating another milestone: In September 2025, the 10 millionth sensor was integrated into its LoRaWAN network. "When we started expanding the network in 2016, we hadn't expected this scale," says [name/title of spokesperson]. Alexander Lehmann, Managing Director of the group. “Today we are creating the digital infrastructure to advance smart applications and climate protection in many countries. This has made us a global pioneer in digitalization.” Internationalization began in 2018 with the acquisition of the Danish company Brunata A/S. Today, the group's network is available in 15 countries. Minol alone has installed over seven million smart devices for the housing industry, which transmit their data to more than 100.000 gateways.
LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) transmits data over long distances with low energy consumption. It serves as a scalable foundation for Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in smart cities, industry, and the housing sector, for example, for submetering, smart metering, environmental monitoring, or the intelligent control of building systems. With LoRaWAN, Minol is relying on a future-oriented technology that is now an important component of digital infrastructures worldwide.
Important lever for climate protection and legal requirements
The building sector emits around 200 million tons of CO₂ per year. Approximately half of this is attributable to heating and hot water. To achieve the climate targets by 2045, not only structural modernizations are needed, but also digital, networked solutions that visualize energy flows and automate processes. Minol uses LoRaWAN, among other things, to remotely read utility meters, make energy consumption transparent, and thus implement the German Heating Cost Ordinance (HKVO) for its customers. "The technology has proven its worth – it is the decisive success factor for meeting the legal requirements of the HKVO and sustainably reducing CO₂ emissions," says [name/title of spokesperson]. Ralf Görner, Managing Director at Minol. “With our solutions, we support both tenants and landlords in becoming part of the energy transition.” One example is the Minol app, which allows residents to view their consumption and better manage their own CO₂ footprint.
Additional applications include remote functional testing of smoke detectors and monitoring of indoor climate via CO₂ and temperature sensors. The underlying LoRaWAN radio system, Minol Connect, allows for the integration of numerous other IoT solutions. This creates a future-proof digital ecosystem for the intelligent management of real estate.
Wide range of applications
The network provides valuable services not only in the housing sector. "LoRaWAN has revolutionized the way energy suppliers, housing companies, and smart cities operate. The technology offers reliable, energy-efficient connectivity and is therefore the foundation for many smart applications," says Zeljko Petrina, Managing Director at Zenner. While Minol focuses on the housing sector, Zenner is active in the smart city sector. Thanks to LoRaWAN, utilities can, for example, automatically read water, gas, or heat meters, detect leaks in the network, and receive flood forecasts. Cities are supported in the intelligent control of street lighting, parking management, and demand-based waste disposal. The group of companies is continuously working on further applications of LoRaWAN. The goal is a digital, climate-friendly, and resilient future for cities, utilities, and the housing industry.
