Cloud2Cloud for intelligent building management

The real estate industry is undergoing a digital transformation. Digital tools are increasingly being used to make processes more efficient, improve services, and develop new business models.

Leinfelden-Echterdingen, May 2025: Buildings are far more than just structures made of concrete and brick – they are veritable data sources. Measurements such as heating and water consumption, or other sensor data, provide valuable information for digital building management. With the right technology, this data can be transformed into useful applications for residents and managers, for example, through tenant apps that provide up-to-date consumption information.

A driving force behind this development is the Heating Costs Ordinance (HKVO), amended in 2021. Its aim: greater transparency regarding consumption for tenants. The ordinance mandates the use of modern, remotely readable metering technology – for new devices since 2021 and for existing meters by the end of 2026 at the latest. Furthermore, the HKVO stipulates that the annual heating bill must include additional information – such as the fuel mix used and the resulting CO₂ emissions. As soon as remotely readable technology is in place, landlords and property managers are also obligated to provide monthly interim consumption information (uVI).

Two ways to use data

For practical implementation, Minol offers two solutions: the user-friendly online portal Minol direct, which clearly presents and visualizes consumption data, or the Cloud2Cloud interface, which allows the information to be directly integrated into existing IT systems. This enables companies to use their own interfaces for displaying and further processing the data. Cloud computing plays a key role in this. According to the vdw/vnw "Digital Agenda 2025," 21 percent of housing companies already use cloud services, and 24 percent plan to implement them within the next five years. The advantages lie particularly in the high availability of the data and the high security standards.

From the property to the Minol Cloud

With its Minol Connect wireless system and associated cloud services, Minol supports the housing industry in its digitalization efforts and the implementation of the German Heating Cost Ordinance (HKVO). Devices installed in buildings transmit their data via LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) to a gateway, which then forwards it to the Minol Cloud – securely, without local storage, and in compliance with German data protection law. The Minol Cloud makes the data available online, for applications including eMonitoring and the Minol app. A cloud-to-cloud interface also allows the data to be integrated into customer or service provider systems, for example, for in-house applications – always in compliance with the GDPR.

For customers with their own data infrastructure, Minol's cloud-to-cloud service enables them to use data stored in the Minol Cloud even outside the Minol ecosystem. Data can be securely accessed via interfaces and integrated into their own applications. This allows the real estate industry to develop customized solutions and integrate the data, for example, into tenant apps or portals.

Cloud-to-cloud solutions are laying the foundation for tomorrow's digital building management. They make processes more efficient, increase service quality, and open up new digital opportunities – for a future-proof, networked real estate industry.
